According to traders, the mandi is witnessing around 120 truckloads of daily arrivals, creating a glut situation in the market. As a result, prices remain suppressed, with buying activity unable to match the available supply.
Market participants also highlighted the impact of climate change, noting that traditional harvesting cycles have shifted. Earlier aligned with festivals like Baisakhi, crop timings are now less predictable, affecting supply patterns and market stability.
In terms of pricing:
Chipsona potatoes are trading between ₹250 to ₹400 per bag, depending on quality
Sur variety is priced between ₹400 to ₹700 per bag
Other varieties such as Diamond (Punjab), Pukhraj, Jyoti, and newer arrivals from Una and Hoshiarpur regions are also actively traded in the mandi
Traders emphasized that quality has become a critical factor in price realization. Damaged or ‘hot’ potatoes are facing heavy discounts, especially as sorting and grading costs have increased to around ₹30 per bag.
On the supply side, pile-stored (non-cold storage) potatoes are still entering the market, keeping prices under pressure. However, industry participants expect that once this supply reduces, demand for cold storage stock may improve, potentially supporting price recovery.
A noticeable shift in consumer preference is also emerging, with Diamond potatoes from Punjab gaining popularity due to better durability and resistance to spoilage.
