India’s Processed Potatoes Witness Surge in Demand Across Southeast Asia
India’s processed potato sector is experiencing a significant export boom, emerging as one of the fastest-growing categories in the country’s food export basket. According to a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), the export of dehydrated potato products, such as flakes and pellets, has skyrocketed from $11.4 million in 2021-22 to an impressive $63.3 million in 2024-25.
Key Markets and Strategic Integration
Southeast Asia has become a primary destination for these products, with Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand accounting for nearly 80% of India's total exports. Malaysia leads the demand, with its imports from India jumping from $5.1 million to over $22.1 million in just three years. This trend highlights India’s successful integration into the snack and convenience food supply chains of Asian economies.
Growth Drivers: Production and Global Shifts
The surge is backed by India’s massive annual production of 56 million tonnes of potatoes. While traditional giants like Europe face rising energy costs and erratic crops, and China focuses on domestic needs, India has stepped in as a reliable, low-cost supplier.
Regional Powerhouses
Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh have emerged as the processing hubs. Districts like Mehsana and Banaskantha in Gujarat, along with Agra and Farrukhabad in UP, are leading this transformation through modern dehydration plants, contract farming, and advanced cold-storage networks.
With stable production and improving quality standards, India is well-positioned to remain a permanent source for global Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) and food manufacturers.
