Potato Prices Recover to ₹1,200/qtl Nationally, But State-Level Gap Remains Wide

The latest available mandi data for 7 October 2026 shows a recovery in potato prices across the national market. The median modal price reached ₹1,200/quintal, up from ₹1,100 on 6 October — an increase of about 9.1%.
Around 51,921 tonnes of potatoes were reported across 599 mandis. However, the recovery is not uniform. Uttar Pradesh, which accounts for a large share of national arrivals, was at around ₹600/qtl, while Gujarat and Maharashtra were at ₹1,280 and ₹1,300/qtl respectively.
This wide difference shows that location, variety, quality, demand and local arrivals continue to play a major role in farmer realisations.

🚜 What This Means for PB Stakeholders
Farmers:
The national recovery is positive, but farmers in high-arrival regions such as UP are not seeing the same price level as western and southern markets. Sale decisions should consider local arrivals and potato quality rather than the national average alone.
Traders:
The large difference between UP and markets such as Gujarat and Maharashtra creates scope for monitoring inter-state movement, but transport and quality differences need to be considered before assuming arbitrage opportunities.
Cold Storage Owners:
Price recovery could support gradual movement of stored stocks, but the large UP supply means market pressure can remain in major production belts.
Buyers & Processors:
Regional price differences may continue to influence sourcing decisions, particularly where specific varieties or processing-grade potatoes are required.
🟢 PB Takeaway
Potato prices have recovered to ₹1,200/qtl nationally, but this is not a uniform market recovery.
UP remains under pressure with large reported arrivals, while Gujarat and Maharashtra are showing considerably stronger prices. For the coming days, arrivals, quality and regional demand will be more important than the national average alone.
