Delhi’s Azadpur mandi continued to experience weak trading conditions on 9 June as extreme summer heat (45–46°C) and shifting consumer demand patterns significantly reduced potato movement in the market.
According to traders, total arrivals stood at around 116 trucks, along with a high carry-forward stock of nearly 65 trucks from the previous day. Market participants noted that sales activity remained slow, resulting in increased inventory pressure within the mandi.
The current demand slowdown is largely attributed to seasonal consumption shifts, with buyers increasingly preferring fruits such as mangoes, litchis, and cherries during peak summer conditions.
Despite weak overall demand, premium potato varieties continued to maintain price stability based on quality.
Reported price ranges (per 50 kg bag):
• Chipsana: ₹500–₹550, with premium lots up to ₹600
• Sur Potato (Chandausi–Bisoli): ₹700–₹850
• Sur Potato (Aligarh–Mathura belt): ₹500–₹600
• 379 variety: ₹350–₹450 depending on quality
• Diamond variety: ₹400–₹550
Traders highlighted that the market remains highly quality-driven, with clean and well-graded potatoes receiving relatively better rates, while lower-grade stock continues to face difficulty in selling.
Market participants also issued strong advisory warnings to farmers and suppliers, recommending avoidance of sending poor-quality potatoes such as small-sized, damaged, or cut produce (gulli, kiri, etc.), as these lots are struggling to recover even basic transportation costs in the current slow demand environment.
Looking ahead, traders expect further constraints in mandi space due to incoming seasonal stone fruits from hill regions such as Shimla, Manali, and Kashmir. This is likely to temporarily reduce potato handling capacity in the coming weeks.
