The Uttar Pradesh Cold Storage Association has issued an important advisory to cold storage owners across the state. According to the association, the current international situation and war-related disruptions have impacted the import of natural gas into India.
As a result, several fertilizer manufacturing units have either reduced their production or temporarily shut down operations. Since ammonia is primarily produced by these fertilizer units, the availability of ammonia across the country has been affected.
Supply May Remain Disrupted for 10–15 Days
Based on the information available, the association has indicated that it may take time for the supply situation to normalize. Even after the situation stabilizes, the availability of ammonia may remain affected for another 10 to 15 days.
Ammonia is a critical refrigerant used in the cold storage industry. Without adequate ammonia, the safe operation of cold storage chambers becomes difficult, which can directly impact the storage and preservation of potatoes.
Operate Storage Chambers According to Available Ammonia
The association has advised all cold storage owners to operate their facilities strictly in accordance with the ammonia available at their respective units.
Cold storage operators have also been urged to store only that quantity of potatoes which can be safely preserved with the available ammonia supply.
Risk of Loss if Storage Exceeds Safe Capacity
The association has warned that if excessive quantities of potatoes are stored and cold storage operations are later affected due to ammonia shortages, there is a serious risk of damage to the entire stock stored within the facility.
Therefore, operators are requested to run only those chambers that can be safely operated with the available ammonia, ensuring the protection of stored potatoes and avoiding large-scale losses.
