To enhance farmers’ income and promote cultivation of high-value crops, the Government of Bihar announced a new incentive scheme to promote cultivation of the premium Lady Rosetta potato variety across 17 districts, offering farmers up to 75% subsidy on cultivation costs. The Lady Rosetta Area Expansion Scheme, rolled out by the Department of Horticulture, is aimed at strengthening farmers’ earnings and aligning cultivation with rising demand from the chips and French fries processing industry.
Under the scheme, eligible farmers with landholdings between 0.25 and 5 acres can apply for support through the official horticulture portal or the Bihar Agriculture App. Approved farmers will receive about ₹1.25 lakh per hectare in input cost coverage, with ₹70,397 released upfront for seed and input purchases and ₹23,466 after field inspection once planting is complete. Selection will follow a first-come, first-served basis.
Officials emphasized that Lady Rosetta, known for its high yields, uniform tubers, and strong processing quality, has growing domestic and export demand. The variety is particularly favored by processors for its suitability in chips and French fries production. The expansion is expected to enhance Bihar’s role as a major producer of processing-grade potatoes, potentially opening new market opportunities.
The scheme will be implemented across 17 districts: Aurangabad, Banka, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Gopalganj, Katihar, Khagaria, Lakhisarai, Nalanda, Nawada, Patna, Samastipur, Saran, Sheikhpura, Siwan, and Vaishali.
