Gujarat is poised for a bumper potato harvest this season, with sowing up by 13 percent during the ongoing Rabi cycle. The state now contributes an estimated 50 lakh tonnes annually to India’s total output — making it the fourth-largest potato producer after Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar. Last year, Gujarat’s potato production rose by 7 lakh tonnes, reaching a record 50.80 lakh tonnes.
Sowing Surge and Acreage Expansion
Official data show that Gujarat has completed about 66% of the Rabi-season plantation, spanning 30.61 lakh hectares. Over the same period last year, potato cultivation covered 1.25 lakh hectares; this year it has already reached 1.48 lakh hectares and may rise to 1.60 lakh hectares under favourable conditions.
With sowing still underway and weather conditions largely favourable, officials expect another strong potato crop this year.
District-Level Trends & Crop Outlook
Major potato-growing districts include Banaskantha and Sabarkantha, followed by Aravalli, Gandhinagar, Patan and Mehsana. In contrast, Central Gujarat saw only about 4,600 hectares under potatoes, while Dwarka district in Saurashtra had just 600 hectares. With sowing still underway and weather conditions largely favourable, officials expect another strong potato crop this year
