1. Hybrid Potato Demand Weakens as Storage Stocks Face Pressure

The potato market remains under pressure in major Uttar Pradesh storage centres, particularly Farrukhabad, Kanpur and Kannauj. The newspaper reports weak demand for hybrid potatoes, with several storage operators finding it difficult to move stocks. Traders are also cautious about buying lighter-quality potatoes, while good-quality produce is being held back by farmers. In Farrukhabad, hybrid potato prices have weakened, while some varieties have seen gradual declines. The situation is adding pressure on traders who are clearing older positions and may limit fresh buying.

2. Cold Storage Owners Seek Rental Subsidy as Potato Prices Stay Weak

The Uttar Pradesh cold-storage sector has raised concerns about the difficult potato marketing season and requested government support through a subsidy on cold-storage rent for farmers. The association highlighted that farmers are struggling to receive remunerative prices, while traders are also facing weak movement of stored potatoes. The newspaper reports that the issue was discussed with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, who assured the delegation that the concerns would receive attention. A rental subsidy could reduce farmers’ storage costs and provide some relief during a season when potato prices and movement remain under pressure.

3. UP Moves to Improve Fertilizer Availability for Kharif Farmers

Uttar Pradesh has stepped up action to ensure adequate availability of urea, DAP and other fertilizers for the Kharif season. The state says it is coordinating with the central government and monitoring district-level stocks and distribution. By July 28, reported availability included 31.55 lakh metric tonnes of urea, 4.81 lakh tonnes of DAP and 4.90 lakh tonnes of NPK, among other fertilizers. Although the report is broader than potato, timely fertilizer availability is important for potato growers preparing for the coming crop cycle. The state has also asked farmers to avoid unnecessary advance stocking.

4. Major Mandis Show Controlled Potato Arrivals and Mixed Prices

Potato markets across major centres are showing different demand and price conditions. Delhi’s Azadpur market recorded substantial fresh arrivals, with hybrid, chipsona, Gujarat and other varieties trading at different levels based on quality. Mumbai arrivals were relatively controlled, while demand for dry potatoes improved with rainfall. Kanpur recorded around 35–40 trucks of potato arrivals, with hybrid potatoes and varieties such as Chipsona, Kanchan and Sinduri trading according to quality. Bengaluru also reported continued movement of stored potatoes. These differences show that quality, location, arrivals and local demand remain important price drivers for traders. 

5. New Storage Technology Could Extend Potato Shelf Life to Nine Months

A storage technology developed by the Central Potato Research Centre, Jalandhar, could allow potatoes to be stored for up to nine months. The technology focuses on removing excess water from potatoes after harvest, helping reduce deterioration during storage. A machine has also been developed to automate peeling, cutting and drying, with the processed potato packed for storage and later use in food preparation. Better post-harvest handling can reduce losses and improve availability beyond the normal harvest period. For farmers, traders and processors, such technologies could create more flexibility in storage and market timing.
