Chakarpur Potato Market Sees Improved Demand After Rainfall, Premium Varieties Gain Support

The potato market in Kanpur’s Chakarpur mandi witnessed improved trading activity on 12 June as demand strengthened following recent rainfall. Traders reported better customer movement in the market, helping support potato sales after a relatively slow trading period.
According to mandi participants, daily arrivals were estimated at around 30–35 vehicles. Improved buying activity contributed to stronger movement across several potato varieties, particularly premium-quality stock.
Reported market prices included:
• Shrinath potatoes trading around ₹10 per kg.
• Hybrid and wet potatoes selling between ₹6–6.5 per kg.
• Agra Gulla potatoes trading around ₹6.5 per kg for premium lots and ₹4.5 per kg for lighter material.
• 3797 potatoes selling between ₹6–7 per kg.
• Premium Chipsona potatoes trading around ₹11.5 per kg, while average-quality Chipsona sold between ₹9–10 per kg.
Traders highlighted that quality continues to play a major role in price realization. Well-graded potatoes with better appearance and storage condition are receiving stronger buyer interest compared to average and lower-grade stock.
Market experts also discussed the outlook for wet potatoes currently available in the market. According to experienced commission agents, wet potatoes are likely to continue finding buyers until regular monsoon rainfall becomes widespread. Once monsoon activity strengthens, demand is expected to gradually shift towards dry and better-stored potatoes.
Farmers were advised to release wet potato stock gradually rather than holding it for extended periods. Traders cautioned that prolonged storage of wet potatoes may increase quality deterioration risks and lead to additional sorting and handling expenses.
Looking ahead, mandi participants expressed cautious optimism regarding market prospects. Traders believe that reduced arrivals over the weekend and continued improvement in demand could support a slight price increase in the short term.
The overall market sentiment in Chakarpur has improved compared to previous weeks, with rainfall-driven demand recovery helping absorb available stocks. However, future price direction will continue to depend on:
• monsoon progress,
• cold storage stock releases,
• arrival volumes,
• and consumer demand trends across North Indian markets.
