Chakarpur Potato Market Remains Stable Despite Seasonal Demand Slowdown
Chakarpur Potato Market Remains Stable Despite Seasonal Demand Slowdown

The potato market in Kanpur's Chakarpur mandi remained largely stable on 8 June, although traders reported slightly slower demand due to the ongoing summer fruit season.
According to market participants, potato arrivals in the mandi were estimated at around 50–60 vehicles. Traders stated that consumer preference is currently shifting towards seasonal fruits such as watermelon, muskmelon, and mangoes, resulting in relatively slower potato movement compared to peak consumption periods.
Despite the softer demand environment, premium potato varieties continued to receive strong buyer interest.
Reported market prices included:
• Chipsona potatoes trading between ₹900–1,100 per packet.
• Holland potatoes trading around ₹1,000–1,200 per packet.
• Sindoori potatoes selling between ₹700–1,000 per packet depending on quality.
• Hybrid potatoes trading in the range of ₹450–600 per packet.
Traders indicated that quality remains the key factor influencing prices, with well-graded and clean potatoes attracting significantly better rates than average stock.
The mandi also witnessed arrivals of onion from Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh. According to traders, onion prices softened by nearly ₹50 compared to the previous trading session, with rates declining from around ₹750 to nearly ₹700.
Market experts believe the current slowdown in potato demand is largely seasonal and linked to consumer spending patterns during summer months. They expect demand for potatoes and other staple vegetables to improve once monsoon activity becomes fully established and the availability of seasonal fruits begins to decline.
Traders also advised farmers to avoid selling their entire stock at once. Instead, a phased selling strategy may help farmers manage market fluctuations and reduce the risk of distress sales.
According to mandi discussions, the market is expected to remain stable in the near term, while future price direction will depend on:
• monsoon progression,
• cold storage stock releases,
• consumer demand recovery,
• and arrivals across major North Indian potato markets.
The Chakarpur market continues to reflect a quality-driven trend, with premium varieties maintaining stronger pricing despite seasonal demand challenges.
