Gujarat Potato Storage 2026 – Market Intelligence Update
Overall Storage Position
As per data compiled by the Gujarat Cold Storage Association, total potato stocks stored in Gujarat cold storages during 2026 stand at 7.95 crore bags, compared with 6.82 crore bags last year. This represents an increase of approximately 16.5% year-on-year, indicating a significantly higher inventory position entering the marketing season.
Conversion Note: Standard potato stocks are assumed at 50 kg per bag, while CIPC-treated stocks are packed at 53 kg per bag. Accordingly, tonnage calculations below account for the higher weight of CIPC bags.
Total Stocks in Metric Tons
Total Stocks: 7,94,84,302 bags
Equivalent Volume:
Non-CIPC stocks (39,463,518 bags @ 50 kg): 19.73 lakh MT
CIPC stocks (4,00,20,784 bags @ 53 kg): 21.21 lakh MT
Total Estimated Stocks: 40.94 lakh MT
This is substantially higher than the estimated stock position of approximately 35.1 lakh MT during the same period last year.
District-wise Highlights
1. Deesa Remains the Largest Storage Hub
Deesa accounts for 3.81 crore bags, nearly 48% of Gujarat's total stored stocks. Out of this, 1.20 crore bags are under CIPC treatment, while 2.22 crore bags are available as table potatoes.
2. Sabarkantha Shows Sharpest Growth
Sabarkantha stocks increased from 1.79 crore bags last year to 2.46 crore bags this year, reflecting strong production and storage inflows. Notably, over 82% of stocks are under CIPC treatment, suggesting expectations of longer holding periods and delayed market release.
3. Dehgam and Vijapur Record Moderate Increases
Both Dehgam and Vijapur reported stock growth compared with last year. Combined stocks in these regions exceed 1.39 crore bags, strengthening North Gujarat's overall inventory position.
4. Kheda Sees Slight Decline
Kheda stocks declined marginally from 29.97 lakh bags to 28 lakh bags, making it the only major region showing lower storage volumes versus last year.
Stock Composition Analysis
1. Seed Potato: 71.98 lakh bags (9.1% of total stocks)
2. CIPC Stocks: 4.00 crore bags (50.3% of total stocks)
2. Table Potato: 3.23 crore bags (40.6% of total stocks)
The high share of CIPC-treated potatoes indicates that a significant portion of the crop is expected to be marketed gradually over the coming months rather than being released immediately.
Market Outlook
The combination of higher overall inventories, large CIPC holdings, and strong stocks in Deesa and Sabarkantha suggests comfortable potato availability in Gujarat. Unless demand from processing, exports, or interstate trade accelerates significantly, the higher stock position may continue to exert pressure on open-market prices during the coming months.
Market participants should closely monitor stock liquidation trends, processor procurement activity, and weather-driven demand shifts.
