Farrukhabad Potato Market Sees Improvement in Premium Potato Prices as Arrivals Decline

The potato market in Farrukhabad’s Satanpur mandi witnessed mixed trading activity on 14 May, with premium-quality potatoes showing improvement in prices while weak and damaged stock continued to remain under pressure.
According to traders, mandi arrivals were slightly lower compared to previous sessions, with an estimated 30–35 truckloads reaching the market today. The reduction in arrivals provided some support to good-quality potatoes and helped stabilise trading sentiment.
Clean and better-quality potatoes reportedly traded in the range of ₹450–₹500 per quintal. Demand for the “Holland” variety remained particularly strong, with prices reaching nearly ₹821–₹831 per quintal for selected lots.
Market participants stated that buyers are currently focusing mainly on:
• clean appearance,
• proper grading,
• strong skin quality,
• and uniform-sized potatoes.
As a result, premium-quality stock continues to receive relatively better buyer interest despite overall market pressure.
On the other hand, chequered and low-grade potatoes remained under heavy pressure due to weak demand. Traders reported that damaged and poor-quality potatoes were sold at significantly lower rates, in some cases around ₹251 per quintal.
Farmers expressed concern over the growing gap between premium and weak-quality potato prices. According to growers, a substantial quantity of potatoes stored in cold storages suffered quality deterioration this season, increasing the availability of weak stock in the market.
Many farmers stated that recovering:
• storage expenses,
• labour costs,
• and production investments
has become increasingly difficult for lower-grade potatoes.
Traders also indicated that only selected high-quality lots are currently receiving profitable returns, while average stock is witnessing slower movement.
Apart from potatoes, mandi discussions also included maize trading activity, where traders estimated that maize prices could open around ₹18–₹20 per kg in the coming sessions.
The Farrukhabad market currently remains strongly quality-driven, with buyer preference heavily tilted towards clean and well-graded potatoes. Market direction in the coming days is expected to depend largely on:
• mandi arrivals,
• disposal of weak stock,
• and overall buyer activity.
