India Approves Four New High-Yield Potato Varieties for Nationwide Cultivation and Processing

New Varieties Released for Farmers
The ICAR–Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla, has developed four potato varieties — Kufri Ratan, Kufri Tejas, Kufri Chipbharat-1 and Kufri Chipbharat-2 — which the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has cleared for nationwide seed production, cultivation and processing.
Indian Council of Agricultural Research
What the Varieties Offer
Kufri Ratan: Table-potato variety, matures in ~90 days, yield 37–39 t/ha, red-skinned tubers with good storage.
The Hans India
Kufri Tejas: Heat-tolerant table potato, 90-day maturity, yield 37–40 t/ha, suited for plains & warm regions.
Times Now Navbharat
Kufri Chipbharat-1 & 2: Developed for chips/processing — high dry-matter, low sugars, yields 35–38 t/ha, matures in 90–100 days. Ideal for processing plants and food industry.
Benefits for Farmers, Traders and Processors
These new varieties aim to boost potato productivity and quality seeds across India. For farmers — higher yields and better income. For traders and processors — consistent, good-quality raw potatoes suitable for table use or chip-processing. The move strengthens India’s potato value-chain and supports both domestic consumption and food processing industry growth.
