Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi continued to witness pressure in the potato market on 8 May as the arrival of old “dump” stock affected overall trading activity and price movement.
According to traders in the mandi, around 103 potato vehicles arrived today, while nearly 34 vehicles of unsold stock were already pending in the market. Traders stated that demand for good-quality cold storage potatoes remains stable, but lighter and older stock is still facing slower sales.
Market participants said buyers are currently showing preference towards clean, properly graded potatoes with better skin finish and uniform size.
Among the major varieties:
• 379 cold storage potatoes were reported around ₹410–430 per 50 kg for premium quality lots.
• Surya potatoes from the Aligarh belt traded around ₹500–550 per bag.
• Higher-grade Surya potatoes from the Chandausi region reportedly sold between ₹800–1000 due to superior grading and size quality.
Traders also highlighted that Chips Sona continues to remain one of the most demanded varieties in the market, accounting for a significant share of daily trade activity because of strong demand from chips and processing buyers.
According to market estimates, the current pressure is mainly linked to the disposal of old “kothe” or dump stock still available in the mandi. However, traders believe this stock may largely clear within the next 5–10 days.
If arrivals of old stock reduce further, the market could gradually stabilise and cold storage potato prices may strengthen, especially for better-quality graded material.
The market currently remains highly quality-sensitive, with major price differences being observed based on:
• grading,
• cleanliness,
• size uniformity,
• and overall appearance of the potatoes.
Traders noted that potatoes from regions known for better sorting and grading practices are continuing to receive stronger buyer interest even in the current weak market environment.
